Places to Visit in Norway

Norway has a lot to offer any visitor and there are a range of things to see and do across the country. Many visitors come to the country to visit towns and cities whilst others come to see the beauties of its natural landscapes - and, of course, some people will come to do both!

Norwegian cities

Norway has a variety of cities which are well worth a visit. Oslo, the capital of the country, has a range of museum and cultural attractions. The Viking Ship Museum and museums dedicated to Edvard Munch and Ibsen are particularly interesting. Bergen is a great base to use for exploring Norway’s fjords and has a range of museums and a charming Old Town. Visitors also find the Old Town of Stavanger interesting to look at. And, visitors who want to see the Northern Lights will generally do so from the base of Tromso.

Natural attractions in Norway

Many visitors to Norway will take cruises or coastal steamers (Hurtigruten) to travel up the northern coastline and to see some of the spectacular fjords in the country. The Northern Lights are also a big visitor attraction. The national park at Jostedalsbreen gives people the opportunity to see a glacier and frozen waterfalls. This is the largest glacier in Europe.

It’s also worth taking a trip along the Flaam Railway which takes visitors through some stunning scenery and which makes regular stops for photo opportunities. And, a visit to Dovrefjell will take you to the home of the mythical Mountain King made famous by Grieg.

And, if you are travelling with kids remember that Norway also has a range of theme parks to suit all ages. For example Tusenfryd (near Oslo) has a range of adrenaline packed rides. Hunderfossen is a theme park situated in a fairytale forest close to Lillehammer and Bo Sommarland is the largest water park in the country.
